Meditation & Mindfulness

BSYA (Med.Teach)

Meditation is not to escape from society, but to come back to ourselves and see what is going on. Once there is seeing, there must be acting. With mindfulness, we know what to do and what not to do to help .... Thich Nhat Hanh

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the creation & establishing, within, a quiet, calm place. A still place where we can rationalise worries, solve problems & recognise & change limiting beliefs.

If you wish to strengthen the relationship with yourself then meditation is an excellent mental tool to learn & practice. Learning to meditate takes commitment, a resolution to be at peace within the self. Meditation is a self discipline, mental mastery, simple, complex & requiring dedication.

Meditation allows us to intentionally enter a state of detachment & heightened concentration & has infinite potential for self awareness & deep personal growth, as well as our physical, emotional & mental health.

Why Meditation?

Meditation offers us great health & emotional benefits. It reduces stress, enabling us to be more rational, calm, less judgemental. As the mind is calmed, our hearts can open, we can heal, resolve & move away from the issues that hold us back. Meditation frees the emotions, clears the mind leading to personal enlightenment & therefore a stronger relationship with the self, which eventually leads us to clearer relationships with those in our environment, as well as with the environment itself.

The purpose of meditation is to bring about change. As we progress into a strong meditation practice we become more aware, more sensitive to our minds & our bodies. From this new enhanced view change naturally unfolds, as the truth is seen by the higher or subconscious mind. Life becomes simplistic, we feel at peace & feeling happy becomes a solid reality, felt on many levels of being.

Meditation aids decision making, with a clear mind, clarity is felt easily, the truth for the self stands out brightly, we find ourselves no longer able to hide behind the ego or the decisions of others.

When we begin meditation we cannot know where it will lead us, we cannot say what changes it will bring to us on a personal nor a environmental level - but it will bring changes & transformations.

You do not need a mountain top cave to meditate, nor religious belief. You mind is your cave & the belief that you need is within yourself.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a Buddhist meditation practice, Buddhism itself is a philosophy, not a religion. Mindfulness is the art of staying within the present, the only reality we have, of being aware, awake. Being conscious of our present self - physically, mentally & emotionally. It is the art of acceptance of what is. Mindfulness involves opening the awareness to the continuously passing parade of sensations, feelings, images, emotions, thoughts & so forth that create the human experience without becoming involved in thinking about them or acting on them.

As meditation has a build up effect on the mind of the meditator, in time it allows the witnessing of whatever goes through the mind without reacting or becoming involved with thoughts, memories, worries, or images. This helps to gain a more calm, clear & non reactive state of mind.

Mindfulness meditation can be likened to a wide angle lens. Instead of narrowing your sight to a selected field as in concentrative meditation, here you will be aware of the entire view. Reality is witnessed in it's truth.
